Well, it took long enough, but Epic finally put the Unreal series on Steam. All I have to say is about damn time. Maybe if this had been done back in November — or the release of Unreal Tournament 3 had been pushed back till 2008, for a good number of reasons — Cliffy B wouldn’t have cried wolf, misconstruing the perception of PC gaming.

In cased you missed it, Cliffy wasn’t shy about admitting his new priorities when it comes to designing games back in February:

“I think people would rather make a game that sells 4.5 million copies than a million and “Gears” is at 4.5 million right now on the 360. I think the PC is just in disarray… what’s driving the PC right now is ‘Sims’-type games and ‘WoW’ and a lot of stuff that’s in a web-based interface. You just click on it and play it. That’s the direction PC is evolving into. So for me, the PC is kind of the secondary part of what we’re doing. It’s important for us, but right now making AAA games on consoles is where we’re at.

It’s fairly naive of him to talk about what games are driving PC sales. Sure his company’s game didn’t do that well — for many reasons beyond people buying “,web-based interfaced…just click and play games” — and PC gamings profits have shown loss over the last couple of years, but there are many factors that aren’t included in those figures.

Since 2003 the PC gaming revenue has been (According to NPD):

2003: $1.3 billion
2004: $1.1 Billion
2005: $953 million
2006: $970 Million
2007: $910.7 million

What’s interesting about this steady decline is that 2004 was the year that both Half-Life 2 and World of Warcraft were released. Both of these titles have strong online revenues — which have yet to be shown in PC Gaming’s NPD’s. World of Warcraft has over 10 million subscribers paying $15 a month that is shown on the NPD’s; of course World of Warcraft is part of Cliffy’s theory for PC decline.

It’s a different story entirely with Half-Life 2 (the farthest thing from Cliffy B’s assessment of whats driving PC sales), which sold 4 million copies from November 2004 to June 2006. During that time it was believed that 25% of Valve’s business came through Steam. If true, 1 million copies, at $50 a pop, is a substantial profit to be missing from the NPD’s. With The Orange Box release last year this 25% may have also increased. Yet without any true numbers from Valve, perceived figures make no difference on annual reports.

PC gaming isn’t dead, nor is it fading. It’s simply changed its business model and the NPD
simply didn’t follow suit. As more businesses decide to go with Steam — or other means of online distribution — releasing these sales figures would be beneficial for the entire industry.

As for Epic finally getting with the program, the Unreal Deal pack is currently occupying the number 1 sales spot on Steam this week.
Go figure.

We haven’t updated the site in a while and, for this, I apologize. The reality of the situation is that we don’t get paid to do this, and have hard real life things get in the way. Moving to a new location–away from everyone we knew–has been hard on both Arthur and I in different ways. We’re both adjusting to our new work loads and social lives, trying to figure out where we’re heading, both professionally and personally. Let me make one thing clear to you though:

The site is not dead.

There, now that we have that cleared up…

What I can tell you–assuming someone out there is reading this–is that the site is going to change. We probably won’t update it but a few times a week, but our content will hopefully make up for that. I want to keep this blog around as a venue to give my own insights into gaming. I don’t, however, want this site to be in any way, shape, or form, comparable to a news blog like Kotaku or Destructoid. This is just a place to give our opinions or thoughts about games and gaming culture–nothing more.

So hopefully you–our very, very few faithful readers–will come back and read what we have to say and like it.

The whole GameSpot-Gerstmann firing debacle really hit a lot of the enthusiast press hard. Since Gerstmann was fired, Frank Provo, Alex Navarro, and, as of today, Ryan Davis have left. GameDaily is reporting that Davis, eight year veteran of GameSpot, is believed to be leaving as a direct result of Gerstmann’s termination. If you want to read Davis’ blog, go to the GameDaily story and they have choice words from it.

If you want to read a really eloquent bit about how one notable person, 1up’s Site Director, Sam Kennedy, feels about the whole situation, go here. It is long, yes, but totally worth it. There is a reason that this man runs the best goddamn video game site that exists (Yes, I am biased).

The whole thing is just so, so sad. You couldn’t pay me any amount of money to work for GameSpot.

Strange word comes from Videogamer.com that, at least in the UK, several retailers have decided to charge £10 more for the PS3 version of Devil May Cry 4 than the Xbox 360 version. Contrary to Sony marketing bollocks, the 360 still has both a higher install base and significantly higher game sales in the UK, so, maybe retailers are looking for a way to subsidize all the SKU changes and hardware stocking costs they’ve had to eat?

“We don’t set the prices of our games, that’s at the discretion of the retailer. In this specific instance, the process has resulted in a price difference, but the process itself is not something we completely control.”

High street specialist retailer GAME lists DMC4 with an RRP of £49.99 on PS3 and £39.99 on Xbox 360. Both Play.com and Amazon.co.uk list the same pricing.”

First of all, at current exchange rates, the 360 SKU of DMC4 costs the equivalent of approximately 80 dollars. This means that the PS3 version is selling for essentially $100.00. So, a moment of silence for our British gaming compatriots, because that is fucking insane. This also means you don’t get to bitch about games being too expensive anywhere on the internet.

Second, the more I think about it, the more I really do wonder if this is aimed at recuperating costs associated with the difficult retail costs associated with Sony’s rapidly transforming strategies for the PS3 over the last 12 months. At least here in the states, hardware price drops are frequently eaten by retailers (although people are welcome to correct me if I’m wrong, as this is the case at Frys, Best Buy, and Gamestop at the very least), and retailers already make next to nothing on hardware. Will other retailers in the UK and EU decide to follow suit?
